May 23, 2017

Dear St. Katharine of Siena School Families,

The span from 1980 - 2017 is thirty-seven years!  In some cases, that is older than many of you!

Thirty-seven years is the time Marie Frederick has served this school. Besides cafeteria  coordinator, Marie has had several surrogate roles in her time here. She was the unofficial school nurse, when there was no official school nurse. Ask her about her jar of magic medical mints!  She has pitched in at the front desk, handled our stationery order, and ran countless errands for a crazed principal.  Marie has done many other things, and has been someone the school has counted on daily for close to four decades.  She has reminded me at times that  I am her "7th principal", but she's never told me where I was in her rankings.  Marie has a dedication and love for this community that has been evident in ways that many know, and some may not.  I do.  She has a great love  and care for the children and families in this community.  She has been a wonderful example of loyalty to our school community.

This Thursday, May 25, after the 9 am school mass, we will have a short award ceremony in the school yard. We will honor Marie as she retires from her full time job as cafeteria coordinator.

She will be helping us on a part -time basis next year as Susan Hodgens takes over the
full-time position. Please feel welcome to join our school community as we thank Marie for her many years of service and care for the SKS Community. God bless Marie , her husband Tom and their wonderful family with peace, joy, and health.

For the last four years, Cindy McKernan  has led our Home & School  Board with a passion, dedication, and thoughtfulness that has been a model of loyalty and service to our school.  To say this school community is indebted to her would be beyond an understatement. She has led the Home and School Board with class, grace, and humility.  Through her efforts, the Home & School Board, and countless volunteers, our school has experienced unprecedented success. That success is measured in two important ways:

                       * By successful fundraising, including last year's capital campaign (for security system/intercom /playground),  under Cindy's leadership, we remain a school that is sustainable financially.  While so many other parish schools have struggled to stay solvent; we have remained strong.  As a school community we have continued to work hard (and still must do so) to contribute to the school's operating budget. The first $100.000 that we raise each year, goes to our operating budget of the school.  Funds raised after that amount have been successfully used each year to improve the school in a number of ways. The new security /intercom system and the new playground  surface (expected to be completed this summer ) was paid for by capital campaign funds. Cindy has been the driving force and  has spearheaded our  fundraising and the capital campaign. This year we raised almost $200,000.  This accomplishment is quite a testament to Cindy, our Home and School Board and our SKS families.  All this has happened under Cindy's leadership.

*More importantly, while working continually to think of ways to advance our  school, Cindy always kept the vibrant spirit of community at the forefront.  Quite simply, she led by example. No event, cause, or project was too big or too small for her to undertake or participate in. Please join me in thanking Cindy for all she has given to our school community.

I am excited and happy to welcome Rebecca Roe as our new Home & School President. Rebecca has been a tremendous volunteer here at SKS in many capacities. This past year, she served on the Home and School Board and she has been involved in our school community events in a number of ways.  I am truly grateful to her for her accepting this new role and l look forward to working with her. Also new to the board next school year, I would like to welcome  Linda Logan and Marie Starck.

Take care,

Bud
